Understanding ASTM Performance Standards
ASTM is an international testing organization that sets performance criteria based on a number of characteristics including filtration efficiency. Masks that don't have an ASTM performance level on the packaging have not been certified and their true filtration efficiency is unknown.
Criteria | Non-Certified | Level 1 | Level 2 | Level 3 |
Filtration Efficiency, BFE | Unknown | ≥95% | ≥98% | ≥98% |
Filtration Efficiency, PFE | Unknown | ≥95% | ≥98% | ≥98% |
Fluid Resistance, mmHg | Unknown | 80 | 120 | 160 |
Breathability - Delta P | Unknown | <4.0 | <5.0 | <5.0 |
Flame Spread | Unknown | Class 1 | Class 1 | Class 1 |
Filtration Efficiency, BFE - Percentage of aerosol particles filtered at a size of 3 microns.
Filtration Efficiency, PFE - Percentage of submicron particles filtered at 0.1 microns.
Fluid Resistance, mmHg - Mask resistance to penetration by synthetic blood under
pressure (mmHg). A higher fluid resistance provides higher protection.
Breathability - Delta P - Pressure drop across mask, or resistance to air flow in mmH2O/cm2. Greater resistance provides better filtration, but less breathability.
Flame Spread - Measures the flame spread of the mask material.
VetMed Solutions only offers ASTM Level 2 and 3 certified disposable masks to provide a filtration efficiency of ≥ 98%.
